Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Mon, March 15, 2010 14:55:36Truro v Redruth – 14th March 2010
A bright and Sunny start saw Truro play a very tough match against arch rivals Redruth.
The match began with Truro showing the upper hand with some good skills and runs but struggling to break the Redruth defence. Redruth are always the team to beat and were very tough opponents from the off, whilst they displayed some very good organised rugby some of the tackles seemed a bit on the high side.
Truro were lacking some of their bigger players with Oliver Andrews still injured and Sam Bryant stretchered off after only a few minutes with a leg injury, it was left to Charlie and Kyle to try and break the Redruth defense. Tom Eyles took a hard knock to the head and was down for a minute or so in the early part of the game but some excellent passing finally paid off when Alastair found himself with the ball and ran in the first try from nearly half way down the pitch. The pressure on Truro was immense as Redruth continued to push forward with so many trys disallowed as the ball was dropped just short of the line. Truro’s defending was absoltley brilliant with some excellent tackling and defending from Alfie Peters and Tom Weightman, time and time again Truro were left with the ball but were unable to get it clear to the wings to enable some clear runs and maybe a few more long balls out to the wings would have helped. The Truro Scrum was very effective in both games, something that will definatley boad well for the forthcoming festival. Will Rowe had a couple of excellent runs dodging as many Reds as he could before being tackled and setting the ball up for the next Truro player.
Redruth’s persistent pressure finally paid off when they scored in the second half to make the game 1 - 1 at full time and the hardest game I’ve seen all season.
A team change for both Truro and Redruth teams in the second game saw Sam Bryant almost immediately run in a try for Truro, this was shortly followed by another in quick succession by Sam Bentley. It immediately seemed evident that a faster Truro team had Redruth on the run and they struggled to catch the running as Jamie crossed the line for try number 3. Redruth seemed visibly shaken by the pace of the game and try’s 4 and five all came before the whistle blew for halftime, Truro had a comfortable lead of 5 trys to 0.
The second half saw an almost total change of players for Redruth where they obviously fielded a very strong and rested team. Truro’s luck changed from the whistle and Redruth very quickly ran in there first try followed by a second and third. Tom Eyles was by now nusing a studded hand and was replaced by Kyle wardle. It appeared that every time Redruth gained possession they would score despite some brave tackling by Vinne Thomas, Todd Lowe and and Jamie Jones the Redruth pressure was immense and the score was very shortly 5 – 5 with 4 minutes left to play!! If only Truro could create some space and get into there running they would score and this soon happened when Bruno took a fantastic pass and ran in try number 6. The game wasn’t over yet though and Redruth ran in one last try to make the final score 6 – 6.
The boys all played brilliantly and if they can play at the same level in 2 weeks have an excellent chance in the Truro hosted U10's Festival
Well done Truro!
Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Wed, January 06, 2010 13:59:58Truro U10 v Perranporth/St Agnes 03.01.10
Chocolate overload/late nights and a biting wind (and rain!) failed to dampen the spirits of the three teams who turned in admirable performances at Truro. Only the planned tie between Perran and Aggie had to be abandoned due to frozen digits etc. and the irresistible prospect of a hot pasty.
Truro fortunately got to play both sides, beginning with St Agnes. After a tense start Truro’s forward power was setting up quick ball and swift passing from scrum half Sam Hitchins (and Connor after the break) provided space for the backs to break the defence.
Thereafter, the momentum provided by the Truro forwards, rucking and scrummaging well, made it tough for the visitors who despite struggling to make any ground, kept plugging away and tackling themselves to a standstill. Tries from Oliver, Alistair and Connor (put through by Will) demonstrated Truro’s powerful running and passing abilities.
Half time substitutions provided no respite for Aggie, with a replacement front row of Kyle, Charlie and Tom (not bad eh?) continuing to ruck and maul with commitment.
Next, Perranporth stepped up to the plate and were soon under similar pressure, although the forward drives were more even and good ball more difficult to come by. Scrums in particular were very keenly contested and the heavy conditions made it hard work for both sides.
Scores were even at half time, although after the break Truro’s back line were rampant, in particular Alfie Peters who earned the MOM with some dynamic running complete with a ‘showboat’ try.
Some real positives in the way the ball was recycled quickly, and passed out to the backs, coupled with some great offloads (one by Charlie to put Alfie Spouse over sticks in the memory) warmed the cockles better than a new years eve malt (almost).
Congratulations are due to all the players for contributing to some great rugby in difficult conditions.
The boy's also commented that the Pasties were the best they've tasted all season!
Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Tue, December 15, 2009 19:37:10Truro v Hayle – 13th Dec
A fantastic game that saw outstanding play from the whole team from the first whistle.
Team – Alastair, Kyle, Alfie Spouse, Bruno, Charlie, Connor, Sam Bentley, Alfie Peters, Daniel.
The match started with an impressive dodging run from Sam Bentley from the half way line to score the first try within 30 seconds of the start.
The second try again came from Sam in the third minute who ran over in the bottom corner after some good strong play from the forwards.
Play seemed concentrated in the bottom corner for most of the first half where Alfie Peters was unlucky to have to attempts thwarted by some frantic Hayle defence.
Third try was following a fantastic run from Alastair after a loose ball was passed out from the ruck to Alastair who covered half the pitch to touch down number 3.
Hayle were under pressure and struggling to get into the game and create some running space until the 7th minute when there first try came from an impressive run and some poor Truro defence. 3 – 1
More try’s followed very quickly from the Truro start which saw Charlie immediately run straight down the middle to make the score 4 – 1.
Hayle were on the attack again and an impressive tackle from Alfie Peters stopped hayle from making it 2, unfortunately this resulted in him being replaced by Tom Eyles after a stray boot split his top lip! They wouldn’t give up though and an impressive run from the Hayle number 10 saw him weave and dodge the Truro defence and score to make it 4 – 2.
Next it was Truro’s turn again and some impressive work from Daniel who cleared the ball effectively from the Truro scrum led to try number five from Connor who collected the pass from Daniel to cross the line in style. 5 – 1.
Last try of the first half was from Alastair and his second.
First half score Truro 6 – Hayle 2
Second half team was made up of Will, Oliver, Sam Bryant, Tom Weightman, Micheal, Archie, Todd, Tom Eyles, and Harry
The second half began much like the first with Truro dominating play with some very powerful drives from Oliver and Todd and excellent support from Sam Bryant and Harry this was soon rewarded with the first try from Harry after only 4 minutes of play. Next it was Micheals turn who once up to speed was never going to get caught, even running uphill to touchdown right between the posts!
Despite playing downhill Hayle struggled throughout to create space this was down to some fantastic defence by the Truro boys of Tom Eyles and Tom Weightman who were relentless with there tackles which left Hayle wondering what they could do to breach our defence. They finally did after the 8th minute and Hayle scored a there 3rd try to bring the score to 8 – 3.
Will Rowe had an excellent game with some impressive runs down the wing and only just failing to score on 2 occassions but backed up by Oliver the ball was ripped from the hayle maul and driven over to make it 9 – 3. The trys kept on coming as the Hayle team started to tyre and the game was finished with 2 late trys from Todd.
A really impressive game for the boys and a well deserved score.
Truro 11 – 3 Hayle.
Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Fri, November 20, 2009 10:24:33Lankelly Fowey V Truro
In what proved to be a frustrating day for the boys they again came out on top with a deserved win over Lankelly – Fowey.
The match was delayed due to the pitch being tied up by the U9’s meaning a near 2 hours training for Truro prior to the match. The coaches had to juggle a difficult session of keeping the boys warmed up and motivated whilst not tyring them out prior to the game.
Despite the odds being stacked against Truro (enough said!) both teams demonstrated some fantastic Rugby and probably the best of the season so far.
Scrums seemed to be the order of the day in a match that was played exactly as the rule book was written with NO Exceptions!
Play soon got underway and it wasn’t long before the first try was forced over the far corner by Oliver Andrews. The second try was again in the far corner following a driving maul by the Truro forwards to allow Alastair Harding the second try.
More scrums followed with it seemed every single one being awarded to Lankelly, despite this Truro won just about every scrum they contested.
Halftime score Lankelly 0 – Truro 2
The game proved frustrating on a small pitch with little space to move the ball out to the wings or backs so it was continuous rucks, scrums and mauls that progressed the game to the third try and another for Oliver Andrews at the beginning of the second half.
A long half time break saw Lankelly come back a rejuvenated side and despite some strong runs the Truro defence stayed solid meaning every Lankelly attack was stopped and turned just short of the try line. It was one of these turned Lankelly attacks that lead to Truro’s 4th try, a fantastic run from one end to the other by Alastair Harding being chased by the entire opposition team. Alastair crossed the line with a bit of well deserved showboating to make the score a well earned 4 – 0 to Truro.
In what was the longest ever ‘last minute’ of the match Lankelly finally managed a last ditch try following a scrum on the Truro try line.
Final score Lankelly 1 – Truro 4
Man of the Match - Alastair
Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Thu, November 05, 2009 10:16:45Liskeard v Truro – 1st November 2009
A wet and windy start soon gave way to an even windier yet dry match. The Match was played high up on a very open pitch with far reaching views out across the moors.
The starting team of Sam Bentley, Oliver, Alfie Peters, Archie, Tom Eyles, Todd, Michael, Harry and Jamie immediately got in to their stride, demonstrating accurate passes, rucks and best of all working well as a team. >From the 1st minute Liskeard could see they were under pressure and it wasn’t long before the 1st try was scored by the ‘Pocket Rocket’ Michael. A second try followed shortly after following a powerful drive from Oliver to take it 2 trys to nil.
Liskeard battled on bravely but the pressure from the Truro front row was relentless continuously moving the ball forward and using there wings to good effect. 3rd try was a joint effort from Sam Bentley and Alfie Peters who dodged 3 Liskeard players to touch the ball in over the Try line 3 – 0.
The play was fast and flowing and some cracking defence work and tackling from the 2 Tom’s (Eyles and Weightman) made sure Liskeard rarely got past the halfway line. Also Truro were not used to such a small, poorly marked out pitch, so small in fact that when Archie Sutton touched down for what should have been the 4th Try it was (unfairly in my opinion) disallowed as he had gone past and in to the dead ball area.
Half time was fast approaching and Liskeard were forced back every time the made it into the Truro half, this really was text book play from Truro and was rewarded just before the whistle with try number 4 from Alfie Peters.
2nd half, with some fresh legs in the form of Alastair, Charlie, Sam Mathews, Daniel and Alfie Scouse. First try of the 2nd half came from Charlie who was involved in a fantastic move with Sam from the whistle where the team dodged, passed and rucked to finally drive over the line 5 – 0.
6th try from Alastair after a terrific run from the halfway mark. The boys continued to defend well after Liskeard had made good ground to be held back for a full five minutes on the Truro try line, perseverance paid off to the point when the ball was finally cleared and Alfie ran took it down the right wing to safety. Liskeard were determined by now, if it wasn’t for some brave tackling and positive defence from Alfie Spouse and Daniel Lavery Liskeard would have certainly scored. Try number 7 came again from Michael who picked up the ball following a strong Truro drive from deep in their own half.
Shortly afterwards Liskeard finally got one back to make the score 7 -1 , this was just before Charlie again scored to make the final score 8 – 1 to Truro
This was without a doubt the best Truro have played all season, not just because of the score but because they played as a team, with some fantastic passing, defence work, powerful drives and fantastic Ruck overs which all contributed to this weeks ‘Champagne moment’ to Todd Lowe, well done Todd!
After the match a ‘friendly’ was played and saw more fantastic Rugby and more try’s from Archie Sutton, Daniel Lavery Harry Brooksbank and Sam Bentley.
Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Mon, October 19, 2009 15:05:41Truro v Camborne – Sunday 18th October
With a No Show from Helston (they have obviously heard about a rampaging Truro side against Newquay 2 weeks before!) it was a clear 2 way match against Camborne. Camborne like Redruth, train twice a week and are thought of in the same light as one of the teams to beat, and our boys did just that!
Early Match nerves again gave a shaky start for Truro and Camborne saw the advantage. Playing on the up-hill side of the pitch Camborne were too strong in the opening minutes, Truro missed some important tackles and Camborne soon ran in the first try to the top corner within 5 minutes of the start.
Despite the pressure Truro managed some good runs from Charlie, Alastair and Mike but it always seemed support was sorely lacking just when it was needed.
Play was very one sided for the first 10 minutes and Camborne continued to pile on the pressure, the extra training sessions were clearly visible when each time Truro tackled, the Camborne player would automatically drop to the ground, roll over and set the ball up for the next team mate to take it further up the field. A first quarter Scrum collapsed which left hooker, Tom Weightman injured, this coupled with an injured knee saw him brought off with 4 minutes remaining and replaced by Alfie Peters who brought some shove and a fresh set of legs to the scrum. By now Truro were beginning to wake up and play was getting more even with some excellent attacking from a team getting in to there stride. Just before half time a dropped pass from Truro saw the mistake punished when a Camborne player ran nearly the length of the pitch dodged 3 tackles and crossed the line to make it 2 – 0 at the end of the 1st quarter.
Second Quarter and a total team change, for the second match running we were treated to some fantastic tackling from Sam Hitchins and Tom Eyres made any progress from Camborne difficult. But, again the pressure was on and Camborne were playing downhill and the score was soon 3 – 0. Its amazing though how perseverance, teamwork, dedication and 2 coaches shouting threats from the edge of a pitch can turn a game around in such a short space of time and it wasn’t long before Oliver Andrews got one in from his trade mark ‘Shove!’ to make it 3 – 1. Again Camborne were on the attack and some strong Tackling from Alfie Spouse and Sam Bryant saw another try stopped but the pressure was intense and it wasn’t long before the score was 4 - 1. This was the turning point of the whole game and soon Bruno got hold of the ball following a ruck and ran halfway up the field to cross the line and 4 – 2 to Camborne.
Third Quarter and Truro began to get it all sorted out, all that training really paid off with Truro passing accurately and finally getting the rucks right. A very powerful mix of forwards meant they won every scrum they contested which turned the game. Charlie ran forward and kept running to make it 3 tries to Truro. Archie Sutton stopped Camborne from crossing the line with some daring tackles and Alfie Peters made some cracking runs down the wing just failing to score. Again the mix of Charlie and Kyle and backed up by Jamie, Sam Bentley and Daniel worked well and then some fantastic team play saw Mike Austin score 3 in a row and Kyle get the last before the whistle blew for the end of the 3rd quarter Truro 7 – Camborne. 4.
Fourth Quarter, Some fantastic play from Sam Matthews who although only just failed to score got some good long runs in to set up Oliver to push over the line again. Also Connor Ellery picked up from the scrum on 3 occasions and dashed for the line, a fantastic tactic that worked and surprised a deflated Camborne side. Connor again used this tactic to great effect to get in try number 9! Camborne did get a further 2 tries but by then it was too late.
Final Score: Truro 9 – Camborne 6
Match ReportsPosted by Simon Peters Thu, October 08, 2009 20:21:53OK here we go. First match of the season against Newquay was a late game kicking off at 12.15.
A laid back Newquay side arrived late for training but soon got into there stride as the game kicked off. Truro were expecting an easy run but were pushed all the way to a 4 -1 win. During this time Newquay never gave up and continued to punish Truro for every mistake they made.
The match was played over 3 halves which meant all of a large Truro squad got a game.
The first team that included Kyle, Jamie, Alastair, Tom W, Jamie, Sam C, Oliver A, Alfie and Daniel suffered from nerves in the first 7 minutes with lots of forward passes leading to Newquay Scrums. Our boys played very well in the scrums with a very strong threesome of Oliver, Jamie and Kyle winning just about every scrum they contested. The lads from Truro were clearly the stronger side but again silly mistakes meant a hard ride until the first long awaited try from an Oliver Andrews trademark charge! 1-0
The first half saw all the boys defending well with some fantastic tackles from Tom and Alastair. Lots of injuries on both sides saw Tom taken off and replaced by Archie but Newquay kept the pressure on to finally get an equaliser just before the whistle.
The second session saw a change of team that included Micheal, Charlie, Harry, Bruno, William, Alfie S, Todd, Sam Hitchens and Sam. Again a fantastic strat from Truro with lots aggression and progressive play from Charlie when ripping the ball out of rucks and mauls, to eventually take Truro to a 2 -1 lead. Some clever play by Charlie meant again was he placed just right to get the 3rd try of the game. 3 -1
The star of this half was without a doubt Sam Hitchens who displayed some amazing fearless tackles on Newquay players who would have scored if Sam didn’t get in their way! Cracking Play Sam – Well Done!
3rd Half saw Truro really take control of the match and in my opinion, show what they were really made of. Some fantastic gutsy play from the whole team, with Alfie and Alastair making some powereful runs and spectacular tackles meant a tired Newquay squad finally buckled when Oliver was placed right to charge over to make it 4 – 1.
During this half we were treated to some amazing tackling runs by Truro’s ‘Mr Slippery’ Michael Austin, Mike ran from end to end on two occasions and despite a number of tackles he just kept driving, diving and swerving to take the ball from one end to the other – A True ‘Champagne Moment! ‘
In summary: A great start to the season, forget the 1st match nerves, get in to your stride, stop the silly mistakes and play your hearts out…Well done Lads!!!
Truro 4 Newquay 1
