Hosted by Launceston RFC
Fourteen teams made the journey on Mothering Sunday to Launceston for the Under 12 festival and were split into 4 pools for the First Round Matches. Truro were in a group with Penzance, Launceston and St Agnes.
Their first match was against Penzance and the Penzance team had more possession of the ball in the first half and rucked well. A determined Truro fought hard for every ball and this paid off as Lewis Trevelyan got the ball from loose play and passed onto James Coates. James fed onto Ethan Tyler on the wing who made a great break, side stepping several players to score the first try of the day.
After the kick off the ball was rucked, with Ollie Paull getting the ball out to Ben Rogers. Ben made a dash for the line only to be stopped 5m out. Truro had real shape now, and after the line out they fed the ball to both wings until Ben Rogers was able to find space to run in for 2 – 0.
The second half started with solid performances from both sides until Truro upped their game and used the width of the pitch to cross from side to side leaving space for Ben Rogers to weave in for 3 – 0.
Never dispirited, Penzance tackled hard and eventually their determination paid off as they pushed over for a try. Sensing the game was still within their grasp, Penzance won a penalty and passed the ball out to their bigger players who powered and ploughed their way through some loose defending by Truro and scored in the corner for the games’ last try.
Final score Truro 3 Penzance 2
Truro v Launceston
The hosts put up an excellent start, and the first half was intense by both sides with neither able to find the necessary gap to score. There were missed chances by both teams with Truro looking certain to score. Launceston defended well to deny any score in the first half.
The second half started with an early line out which was won by Declan Matthews who repelled the opposition, to ground an excellent try. Launceston brought the game close to the Truro line but Truro won the ball and ran it close to the oppositions try line. From a ruck close to their line, Declan appeared with the ball and dived over for the second try of the game.
Final score Truro 2 Launceston 0
Truro v St Agnes
The teams had only met once before, and both displayed good, hard play. Even as a spectator, the game was too close to call. After several line outs and penalties, neither side could break the others defence and the first half ended 0 – 0.
The second half started in an equally determined manner with Truro perhaps having the upper hand in the scrum. On the sideline, at times it was hard to understand some of the decisions made, but both teams continued to play some solid rugby. Testament to the dedication of both sides came after 11minutes when the ball first crossed the Truro try line but the try was disallowed. This was quickly followed by Truro’s second attempt at a try which was unfortunately again not awarded.
Despite great performances from the Truro players, and looking the more likely team to win, the game ended with a 0 – 0 draw.
This meant that Truro won their pool with a chance to go on and win the County title, whilst St Agnes were runners up.
Semi-finals
Truro v Camborne
Time seemed to have rewound as Truro once more met Camborne. Both teams were undefeated all day, and neither wanted to be beaten by the other.
The game had only just started when Truro won a line out. Both teams were strong in the rucks and mawls and eventually Truro won a scrum. After it was reset, Ben Allan got the ball out to Declan Matthews who passed onto Ethan Tyler. Ethan made a huge break until he was tackled deep in the Camborne half. Camborne won a couple of penalties but Truro remained solid in defence until a ball up field was caught by a Camborne player who ran close to touch and the Truro line. Both teams held their breath and the referee allowed the try.
Play continued in a dogged fashion and Truro chipped the ball forward to their winger who was unable to ground the ball before Camborne cleared to touch.
The second half resumed as the first half had ended, and Truro won a scrum deep in Camborne territory. Ben Allan got the ball forward to a ruck from which Alex Jeffery fed to Ben Rogers who ran the blind side to cross the try line. Truro were jubilant until the ref called play back having disallowed the try.
All the Truro players were now resolute in their game play and stood up to and overpowered Camborne. They took the play forward and then crossed the pitch to Ben Rogers who ran in a fabulous try which ended the game 1 – 1.
The rules of the competition meant that Camborne went onto the finals against Redruth since they had scored the first recognised try. The Truro team graciously accepted the decision and could be proud of not only their record in the competition, but also their outstanding performance on the day.

A great start by both teams, with Liskeard Looe getting close to Truro’s line until Truro broke with the ball to get within 5m of the Liskeard line. However, Liskeard came away with the ball and made a run down the wing with two Truro players chasing and unfortunately colliding with each other. Liskeard scored and converted the opening try.
Truro picked up the pace and Ben Allan tackled anyone in a red and black shirt! The ball was getting closer to the try line and Declan Matthews saw a gap, dodged several players and grounded the equaliser; converted by Ollie Paull.
At the restart, Liskeard kicked off straight to Ethan Tyler who was too quick for their defence and ran in an individual try which was converted by Ollie Paull.
The teams settled into some more attacking rugby with twins Sam and Lewis Trevelyan, Matty Bradbeer, Rory Pugh and Jordan Ellery making some good tackles. Ben Allan moved play to within 5m of the Liskeard try line and held them at bay, refusing to let the ball be ripped from him. As his teammates got there to help him, they pushed over for another try; converted by Ollie Paull.
The second half had some good passages of play and when Truro won the line out ball, deep in Liskeard territory, Jordan Ellery flicked the ball to Alex Jeffery who pushed over for his try. Matty Bradbeer linked well with Will Michell who was determined to keep hold of the ball. He eventually got the ball out to Lewis Trevelyan who grounded the ball for a great try; converted by Rory Pugh.
Final score Truro 47 – Liskeard Looe 7

Valentine’s Day saw the long overdue game between the two teams, and this time the weather was great! Lankelly agreed to play 3 periods of 20 minutes to give everyone a chance of playing. Truro began by giving away a penalty, and Lankelly showed their strength in the scrum. They neatly passed the ball along their line and demonstrated good rucking skills. It took a determined Declan Matthews to turn the ball over, who passed onto Ben Allan. Ben fed the ball onto Ben Rogers on the wing who made a superb run to score the first try of the game; converted by the reliable Ollie Paull.
At the restart, Rory Pugh caught the ball and made headway before passing to Tom Holmes. Going to ground, Declan again got the ball, and in a re-run of the earlier try, got the ball out to Ben Rogers on the wing who ran in his second try. The try was again converted by Ollie Paull.
Lankelly kicked but the ball was caught on the bounce by Matty Bradbeer who was faced by a wall of Lankelly players who eventually brought him down and turned the ball over. Lankelly made a lovely break up field and 3 Truro players missed tackles until Ben Rogers stopped them just short of the try line. Unfortunately for the visitors, they gave away a penalty and Truro won the scrum. Ben Allan deftly got the ball out to Ollie Paull and quickly onto Ben Rogers who this time dodged across field to score in the other corner. The rest of the period saw play going both ways with penalties conceded by both teams, and neither team being able to capitalise on several chances.
In the next 20 minute period, both teams seemed evenly matched until Matty Bradbeer got the ball to just short of the try line and Declan Matthews was able to dive over for the try; converted by Calum Durant. Play continued in a flurry of activity with Lankelly being strong in the rucks and mauls. Eventually Lankelly won a penalty in the Truro half and were able to crash through to score a well deserved try (converted).
The final 20 minutes saw another change of players, and the Lankelly kick off was taken to a ruck. Ollie Paull came away with the ball and passed to Declan who got the ball out wide to Ethan Tyler who was now on the wing. Ethan stretched his legs for a wonderful run to score under the posts which he also converted.
Undeterred, Lankelly kept up good pressure and the strength of their pack paid dividends as they pushed over to score a second converted try. Within minutes, Truro replied with Declan ripping the ball and running in a solo try; converted by Ben Rogers.
Play was then set on the Truro 5m line, but somehow Declan got the ball and kicked downfield into space allowing Ethan to run onto it and carry it over the try line for his second of the game; converted by Ollie Paull. In the games’ last few minutes, Truro won the scrum and as Will Michell was tackled he off loaded to Declan who passed to Ethan. We all watched as he made another great run down the wing for the last try of the game.
Final score Truro 52 – Lankelly Fowey 14
Man of the Match: Will Michell

After several weeks of poor weather it was good to get in a game played on a bright, fine morning at Penair. St Austell turned out a full complement of players including an ex-Truro teammate which the lads took as their gauntlet to put on a commanding performance. Both teams agreed to play three games of 20 minutes to give all the players a run out and the plentiful crowd of supporting parents were treated to a good deal of flowing rugby.
Truro ran in several tries after winning the ball from the forwards and passing quickly out to the backs. Despite good tackling from St Austell, the Truro team were just too strong and ran in a number of converted tries. Solid defending was required to keep a determined St Austell pack at bay and the final stages of the game saw good passages of play from George Sowerby and Sam Trevelyan.
Coaches also picked out Ben Rogers, Calum Durant, Josh Amar and Oliver Paull for particular praise.
Final score Truro 71 – St Austell 0
Man of the match – Ollie Paull

At a muddy Recreation Ground in Falmouth, Truro were well supported and able to field two teams which Falmouth agreed to play in two halves. On a restricted width pitch both halves meant a lot of forward play with good rucking from both sides.
Truro took an early lead with individual efforts from Declan Matthews and a late try from Ben Rogers to walk off at half time leading by 25-5.
The second half saw good play from a number of players out of their normal position and special mention is worthy for Jordan Ellery, James Coates and Matty Bradbeer. Dogged work from Truro forwards saw a number of tries from close range together with a try following a charged down drop-out by Ollie Paull, and a switch pass move leading to
a try from Josh Amar.
Final score Truro 50 – Falmouth 5.
Man of the Match – Jordan Ellery

The first game of the New Year saw Truro host a team they have rarely met before. St Agnes kicked off and both teams seemed equally matched and were strong from the start. St Agnes drove well in the maul but a knock-on by Truro gave the scrum to the visitors. Although it was won by Truro, it was taken to touch and the resulting line out and rucks seemed to have Ben Allan in the middle of them! Ben got the ball out to Will Michell, playing as fly half, and onto Josh Amar, but it was retrieved by St Agnes only to be stopped by Jordan Ellery who got stuck into the action. St Agnes won a penalty but fumbled the ball which was picked by up Calum Durant who sold a lovely dummy. Aggressive play by both sides saw most of the action concentrated in the middle of the field. Eventually a scrum on the Truro 5m line was won by St Agnes who ran in the games first try which they then converted.
Both sides played well in a close game and St Agnes again threatened the Truro try line until Calum intercepted a St Agnes pass and got the ball out wide to Ethan Tyler on the wing who ran the length of the pitch for a magnificent try.
The second half kicked off with Truro’s Matty Bradbeer taking possession and making a dash through the St Agnes defence, well supported by Ben Rogers who took the ball just short of the line. In the resulting ruck, Ben Allan got the ball over the line. This was converted by Calum Durant. Throughout, both teams seemed evenly matched, and the game could have gone either way. At one point Ben Allan seemed to cling to the ball like a limpet and it took several players to shake him loose. From a maul, Declan Matthews passed to Calum and onto Ben Rogers to run in a try which Calum converted.
St Agnes were determined to score but were held back by Truro on the line, until they won the ball from a scrum and ran in a well deserved converted try. The Truro forwards had a better game this week, with Alex Jeffery and Tom Holmes driving the pack forward; but as the final whistle blew Truro had a well deserved victory.
Final Score: Truro 19-St Agnes 14

Truro kicked off but Hayle won an early penalty. Unfortunately for them, Hayle fumbled with the ball and Declan Matthews stole it to run in the games first try. At the restart, Ollie Paull caught the ball and made headway up field. He then off loaded to Ethan Tyler who took a tackle, releasing the ball to Declan Matthews who then passed out to Ben Rogers on the wing for the second try.
Hayle began to hassle Truro and won a couple of penalties but were unable to make anything from them. Both sides missed chances to break until Ethan Tyler found room on the wing to make a superb run for the third try which was converted by Ollie Paull. In a confusing passage of play, Truro came away with the ball to run in another converted try. A determined Hayle then kept Truro back from their try line and held up a try until Declan Matthews again got the ball for yet another try. This was again converted by
Ollie Paull.
The second half kicked off, and in a cheeky move on the 5m line, Truro intercepted a Hayle pass to ground another try. Hayle played well and defended their line and stopped two Truro breaks until they got the ball from a ruck to run in a well deserved try.
The restart passed in a blur as Truro gathered the ball to run in yet another try which Ollie converted. Play continued with the ball going to both sides. Sam Trevelyan got
the ball at the halfway line and weaved his way through the green shirts to dive over for his try – converted by James Coates. From a scrum won by Truro, a cross filed kick by Ollie Paull gave the ball a lovely bounce which Ben Rogers ran onto to score a stunning final try which he also converted.
Final score Truro 52 – Hayle 7

On a blustery day on the top Penair pitch, both teams started with a solid passing game with neither making much ground until Declan Matthews broke from a fumbled ball at the 22m line to run in under the posts. This was converted by Ollie Paull. The game fell into a familiar pattern after the re start until Josh Amar got the line-out ball and passed along the line to Calum Durant who offloaded to Ethan Tyler who ran in a lovely try.
In the next passage of play, Penzance won a penalty on the Truro 5m line and pushed over to score their first try which they then converted. A good period of attacking rugby followed and Truro won the line out ball on the halfway line. Matty Bradbeer passed onto Ethan on the wing who weaved through the remaining Penzance squad to score a fantastic third try for Truro, again converted by Ollie Paull.
Both teams seemed evenly matched and Penzance stole the ball and drove over the Truro try line from close range and converted to bring the score to 19 – 14.
At the start of the second half, Truro won the scrum and got a quick ball out to Ethan Tyler who ran into the corner and scored. It was then converted by Ollie Paull. After missed chances by both sides, Declan Matthews picked up from a Truro scrum to run unopposed and score. Converted by Ollie Paull.
Towards the end of the second half, some slack tackling by both teams allowed play to flow end to end. Linked play by the Trevelyan twins got the ball wide to Ethan who ran the wing for his fourth try of the game – converted by Ollie Paull.Penzance replied by bringing the game to the Truro try line and their non-defeatist attitude eventually saw them ground the ball for the games last converted try.
Final Score Truro 38 Penzance 21
Although credit should be given to Ethan Tyler for his four tries, the Man of the match was awarded to Declan Matthews.
